New Mexico Tours

May 15-16, 2013  Chloride Canyon and Ladder Ranch.  This tour visits the south central Rio Grande Valley and foothills of the Black Range, including a visit to Ted Turner’s Ladder Ranch.  Overnight stay at Black Range Lodge in Kingston.  Birding highlights include breeding Red-faced and Olive Warblers, Painted Redstart, Hutton’s Vireo, Vermilion and Brown-crested Flycatchers, Hooded Oriole and many possible northbound migrants.  Owling will include attempts for Western Screech, Elf, and Spotted.  Pre-registration required.  $150 per person which includes Ladder Ranch entry fee.  Not included:  food, transportation, and lodging.

May 29, 2013  Santa Fe Ski Basin Road.  6am-10:30am  Breeding bird survey of 4 habitats near Santa Fe, from deciduous riparian to spruce/fir/aspen.  We will see a mix of permanent residents as well as neotropical migrants that have recently returned.  Pre-registration required.  $20 per person

June 9, 2013  Elk Mt.  6am-4pm  Breeding season exploration from 7,000′ to over 11,000′.  Various Rocky Mt. specialties will be on our radar such as American Dipper, Gray Jay, Three-toed Woodpecker, Cordilleran, Hammond’s and Dusky Flycatcher, Clark’s Nutcracker, Red Crossbill, Pine Grosbeak.  Bring extra layers of clothing as it can get chilly up there, even in June.  Pre-registration required.  $45 per person

June 19, 2013  Rowe Mesa and Pecos Monastery.  6am-10:30am  This trip will be a quick survey of birds using the north face of Rowe Mesa and those along the Pecos River.  Black-throated Gray, Grace’s, and Virginia’s Warblers, Gray Flycatcher, Plumbeous Vireo, Hepatic Tanager, Gray Catbird are all likely on this tour.  Pre-registration required.  $25 per person
